Barbie With Tattoos Definition
Source(google.co.uk)Barbie has tattoos. That has some parents outraged. Take Tom Gurry of Rego Park, Queens. He told the NY Daily News, “Barbie’s supposed to be a role model for young girls, right? I don’t want my daughter looking up to someone like that.”
Brooklyn school teacher and mother of three girls Rosemarie Bruzzese notes that, “anyone or thing that is in the public eye should be a role model. So, if you want your daughter to be a punk rocker, buy the doll. I will not be. They are exposed to this enough in the media. If I buy into it, then I’m condoning it.”
Who our daughters look up to, despite all the advances women have achieved, is important. Although the proverbial glass ceiling is being shattered in both government and the boardroom, women continue to be defined by their appearance and appeal rather than their accomplishments.
Appearance has been a huge reason many have spurned Barbie, long before her ink stains. The blonde doll’s “sexualized body images and dependence on her man, Ken,” as Brooklynite Samantha Beinhacker, mother of two girls, aged 9 and 7 (and son, 12), describes, was one reason it was “banned” from her childhood. It’s this very reason that the Wisconsin-born Rose Deniz, who now lives in Izmit, Turkey with her two children – a boy and girl, “wouldn’t buy this Barbie, or any Barbie for that matter… Her feet are still inhumanly arched and her body a fantasy size that I don’t want my daughter to think she has to strive for.”
What Deniz and some of the other mothers I spoke to want their daughters to strive for are the role models that encourage them “to be anything they want to be.” “They shouldn’t have to be dolls,” my Brooklyn neighbor who didn’t want me to use her name says. “They (the role models) should be real people. Your daughter isn’t a doll – she’s a real person.”
The reality is that tattoos are on real people, a point that Onawa Gigliotti made when I asked her how she felt about Barbie’s new look. Her daughter is six and half. “On first hearing about his new doll, I was a bit taken back. My second thought was that ‘Wow!’ Some tattoo artist couple somewhere feels that finally they had a Barbie represented their lifestyle. And their kids doesn’t have to be the different one at school anymore.”
“Lessons of diversity and an appreciation for our varied history” is an important factor in how Beinhacker choses toys for her girls. She’s enjoyed the Polly Pocket doll series from The American Girl dolls as well as the Get Real Girl doll, which were “in real life body proportions, participating in hearty play and conveying broad interests activities, careers and backgrounds.” She notes “sadly, this range when off the market and is no longer available, because, it is thought that girls just didn’t understand them.”
Whether Tattoo Barbie will go off the market remains to be seen. The Global Post reports that the $50 doll, aimed for adults, is already sold out. It has not been marketed in kids’ retail shops. It is also not the first time the toy company has put designs on their signature doll. In 1999 and 2009 Barbie had stick-on tattoos. Why has she now gone to permanent ink?
Deniz believes that today “it’s safe to have an edgier Barbie. Tattoos are not really the taboo they used to be, and Barbie’s punky pink hair and clothes makes me think of Francesca Lia Block’s WHEETZIE BAT, meaning: the 90’s. So these are trends that don’t shock me.”
In the end, Deniz notes that while she’s opposed to Barbie she had them when she was a girl. “I’m sure my daughter will want one too. And if that is the case, this (Tattoo Barbie) might be the only Barbie I would ever buy for my daughter — because at least she has an attitude.”
